Constable W.H. Davis, who was on the train, witnessed the accident. He leaped from the train and ran to Mr. Stowe's side.
A doctor was called but death had been instant.
According to Constable Davis, Mr. Stowe and his son, who lived about a half mile west of Republic, started walking down the right of way to their home, paused for a minute to talk to friends, then continued on. The Texas Limited, which leaves Springfield at 4:10, was leaving Republic.
For some reason neither he or his 14yr.old son, Raymond, heard the warning siren sounded by the engineer till it was but a few feet away. Raymond then realized their peril and tried to save his father by grabbing his arm to pull him to safety. His dad was somewhat deaf and didn't understand or it was too late when he did. Raymond barely escaped himself, he jumped out of the way just as the engineer shot past.
John L. Stowe is survived by his wife, Mary, and five children; John E. of Claremont, OK, Arthur of Lebanon, Bessie 18, Raymond 14 and Mabel 12, all who live at home.
Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery at Republic.
