James Stephen Carter passed away on September 5, 2022 in Waxahachie, TX surrounded by family and friends. Stephen was born March 19, 1957 in Oceanside, California to James and Beverly Carter. His family moved to Rosenberg, Texas for a short period of time and then made the move to Italy, Texas to be closer to his grandparents. During school, he loved sports, especially basketball, and graduated from Italy High School in 1975. He took classes at Texas A&M in College Station and then came home and worked at Milford State Bank before he began helping his dad in the family business.

Stephen married Cynthia "Cindy" Carter on March 21, 1980 at First Baptist Church in Avalon, Texas. He made the decision to accept Jesus as His Lord and Savior in that same church just a couple of years later. He and Cindy attended First United Methodist Church in Italy with his family, and he was a member of the Masonic Lodge.

Stephen and Cindy lived in Italy where Stephen worked for his father farming and fertilizing. They started their journey together going somewhere every weekend. They enjoyed softball, horses, horse shows, making trips to Las Vegas with his parents, and fun times with friends. Cindy would come home to find her bags packed by Stephen and off they would go on an adventure.

They started their family adventure in 1984 and raised three beautiful daughters, Stephanie, Cristie, and Mistie. Stephen enjoyed time with his family which would include a special son, Greg Abundis. He loved watching them play sports, teaching them all about horses, and taking them hunting. As the girls were growing up, he continued farming and working on tractors, but you might also see him hauling cars around the country. He visited at least 45 states in the first year he hauled cars. He enjoyed taking the girls on his hauls and letting them meet famous athletes. Stephen loved meeting people, and he loved telling stories.

He especially loved telling stories to his pride and joy, his granddaughters, Tinzley and Kylie. Papa, as they called him, loved showing them his surgery scars and telling tales that they were battle scars from fights with "the Indians." The greatest story of all came just a few weeks before his passing—he couldn't wait to call the girls to let them know about a dream he had all about heaven. He described it as something he had never experienced before, and he wanted them to know they didn't need to be afraid. He told them: there is a God and there is a Heaven. Because of his decision to follow Christ, he's now experiencing all of God's glory in Heaven.

He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Beverly Carter, grandparents John and Aline Carter and Laura and Tim Williams, parents-in-law Bill and Rae Burton, sister-in-law Janet Burton, and numerous aunts and uncles.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Cindy Carter, daughter Stephanie Brandon and husband Jimmy of Italy, Texas, daughter Cristie Enriquez and husband Eric of Italy, Texas, daughter Mistie Carter of Italy, Texas, son Greg Abundis and wife Veronica of Ferris, Texas, granddaughters Tinzley Enriquez and Kylie Saxon both of Italy, Texas, sister Renee Finley and husband Kip of Waxahachie, Texas, sister Kelly Cale and husband Roland of Waxahachie, Texas, brother-in-law Gene Burton and wife Julie of McKinney, Texas, one niece, numerous nephews, numerous great nieces and nephews, and special friend, Andy Saxon.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Italy ISD George E. Scott Memorial Scholarship Fund.
