Mary Elizabeth was the second of nine children of George HOOKER and Elizabeth HUFFORD. Mary grew up in rural Carroll County, Indiana, where she got an 8th grade education in a one-room school house. When she was 19, in September 1892, she married 24-year-old Lorin Augustus HAZLETT in Clinton County, Indiana. By 1900, the couple were in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, with their two children Essie (7) and Glen (5). Mary’s husband was a clergyman. By 1910, Mary had suffered the death of her son, and she was in Ashland County, Ohio, with her husband and daughter. Her husband was a traveling salesman for a college; likely it was a religious college. In 1920, they were in Ashland County, Ohio, and her husband was a college professor. The couple divorced in 1926; Lorin married again in 1934, and that marriage ended in divorce. Lorin died in 1952; Mary Elizabeth died in 1963. Their graves are side-by-side. She was survived by one daughter and two granddaughters.
