Rosa grew up in rural Carroll County, Indiana, the third off her parents’ nine children. Rosa had two older sisters, then four younger brothers before she finally got another sister, and Rosa was 15 years old when her baby brother was born. She married Clyde Perrin HURLEY on February 13, 1893, in Carroll County, Indiana. She was 18, and her husband was 19. She and her husband farmed, first in Tippecanoe County and then in Clinton County. Both had 8th grade educations. They had two daughters – Ruth born in 1893, and Mabel born in 1904. Rosa was widowed in 1951 when she was 76 years old. She died at 87 as a result of an accident: She fell in her home, struck her head on a dresser, and was dead within two hours from injuries to her brain. At the time, she was living with her daughter Ruth.
