Matthew Bird was the son of Benjamin and Lillie (Munro) Bird.

A Cabinet Maker, he married Sarah Quincy Greenleaf, the daughter of Daniel and Mary Elizabeth (Chamberlain) Greenleaf, at Dorchester, MA on August 28, 1830. The couple had the following known eight children: Charles Matthew, born 1831; Rebecca Newton, born 1833; Henry Chamberlain, born 1835; Lewis Jones, born 1837; William Greenleaf, born 1839; Dolly Ann, born 1841; John Quincy, born 1843; and Mary Ellen, born 1845.

The family resided in South Boston from at least 1850 and in 1865 were confirmed as residing at 222 Broadway.

Matthew was widowed in March 1865 when his wife Sarah died of unknown causes. He died little more than a year later after he was pulled alive from the water near the Eastern Packet Pier and taken to Police Station No. 8, where he was found dead the next morning. The cause of death was listed as "Congestion of Brain from immersion in water." Burial was beside his wife at Forest Hills Cemetery.

Rescue And Death

Last evening, a man named Matthew Bird fell overboard from Eastern Packet Pier and was rescued from drowning by some citizens. He was taken to the Harbor Police Station, where the usual means were taken to dry his clothes and make him comfortable, but on discharging prisoners this morning he was found dead in his bunk. Deceased was sixty years of age, and belonged in South Boston.
