inscription: Mascot of F.D.N.Y. Ladder Company 29. In memory of Kerry, who made the supreme sacrifice and whose life story, "Kerry The Fire Engine Dog", has entertained many generations of children. Dedicated to all companions of the fire service.Like any other department, the FDNY not only has its mascots, it has its share of legends; those friends of firefighters who are unique or who serve "above and beyond the call of duty." One of these was "Kerry" of Ladder Company 29 in the Bronx.

Kerry was a mascot with the company for nine years when he met his fate at a fire and gave his life "in the line of duty." The story of his life was turned into a popular children's book entitle, "Kerry, The Fire Engine Dog". The book sold millions of copies and was printed twice, in 1949 and 1951. Original copies can still be found on auction sites like eBay.

Kerry's story is also noted in the book "The Last Alarm: The History and Tradition of Supreme Sacrifice in the Fire Departments of New York" published in 2006.

Cemetery records indicate the location of Kerry's grave in a far corner of the cemetery, however any marker that might have been placed upon it is no longer present.

The owners Hartsdale Pet Cemetery unveiled a monument to Kerry's honor at the annual War Dog Ceremony on June 3, 2007. The monument was placed in the garden of the War Dog Memorial; the actual grave remains unmarked.
