John was married on 1860 census to Susan Jennings (daughter of Andrew and Jane (Collins) Jennings. He was a farmer that joined the Confederate Army Aug. 31, 1861, mustering into Company C, 24th Virginia. He was killed at Second Battle of Manassas, Virginia on Aug 29th or 30th.
About 1,700 confederate and 10,000 union soldiers died during that battle. Many bodies were in ditches and along the countryside. Some were so decomposed by the time they could buried that many may have been buried in mass graves, some even on farms, churches and other land. We may never know.
At that same battle his brother, Ferdinand Dalton also lost his life and hopefully is buried near him.
He left a widow and 3 children
