Samuel Dalton enlisted on October 16, 1864, in Carroll County, Virginia, as a Private, Company C, 24th Regiment, Virginia Infantry. He was captured at Five Forks on April 1, 1865, and sent to Point Lookout, Maryland, as a Prisoner of War, arriving April 6, 1865. His name is on a roll of "Sick Prisoners of War" released on June 5, 1865, on taking the Oath of Allegiance to the United States. On June 8, 1865, he was admitted to Jackson Hospital, Richmond, Virginia, on died on June 17.

According to the Vagenweb website, Samuel was 23 years, 3 months & 25 days when he died of diarrhea which would make his birth Feb 21, 1842 in Grayson County, Va. This also lines up with the 1850 & 1860 census records showing ages of 8 and 18.
