Disaster Memorial. The Brunner Mine memorial located in the Stillwater Cemetery commemorates thirty-three miners who were killed in the Brunner Mine Disaster, New Zealand's deadliest mining disaster. On March 26th, 1896 an explosion occurred in the Brunner coal mine which traveled through the mineshaft, killing sixty-five miners as they were working as a result of a collapse of part of the mine as well as the effects of black damp. All bodies were recovered from the mine after miners from other West Coast mines came to aid with the rescue efforts. Other private graves in the cemetery hold the remains of other miners whose families could afford it.
