He was a son of John Cracknell & Hannah Smee.
He first married Frances Kemsley (1811-1836) on 13 April 1828 in Hollingbourne, Kent
they had 5 children

1831 - 1850 Emily Cracknell (+Sedge)
1832 - 1876 Henry Cracknell (+Cummins d. NSW)
1834 - 1916 Ellen Cracknell (+Last)
After the death of Frances he took 1 of his 5 children (Harry) and eloped with Mary Ann Lurcock. He was at that time her father's coachman. His inlaws took in his other children.
