FORMER HANLEY JEWISH BENEFACTOR.
DEATH OF MR. ADOLPH ALEANDER.
BUSINESS INTERESTS.

We deeply regret to record the death of Mr. Adolph Alexander, former business man in Hanley, and a generous supporter of the Jewish community in Stoke-on-Trent, which occurred at the Hotel Great Central, London, yesterday, at the age of 65.
Although it is more than 30 years since Mr. Alexander left Stoke-on-Trent, his interest in the district never waned. He came to Hanley as a boy with his parents, his father, the late Mr. Jacob Alexander being the founder of the Jewish community in Stoke-on-Trent in 1873. For many years Mr. Adolph Alexander carried on business as a tailor in Piccadilly, and shortly before leaving the district he opened a tailoring establishment in Cheapside, London.

It was not until some years after he left the district that he relinquished his Hanley business and continued that in London until a few years ago, when he retired. He was the owner at the time of his death of considerable property in Piccadilly, Hanley, including those premises occupied by Boots Cash Chemists, which he caused to be built.

JEWISH BENEFACTOR

When in Hanley, he was a prominent leader of the Jewish community and represented Stoke-on-Trent and district on the Jewish Board of Deputies in London, an important post now held by Mr. Colman Sumberg, who was a close friend of Mr. Alexander.
Mr. Alexander was a generous contributor to the cost of the Stoke-on-Trent Jewish Synagogue in Hanley, being President of the Building Fund Committee. He laid one of the two foundations stones of the synagogue October 5th, 1927.

There are many evidences in the building of his affection for the Jewish cause in this district, including some valuable stained glass windows, which he gave as a memorial to his father. Up to the time of his death he was a regular subscriber to the funds of the synagogue, and some time ago sent a gift of £ 50 as a thank-offering for his recovery after an illness.

He did, in fact, take a deep interest in all phases of the life of the Potteries, and contributed to the Josiah Wedgwood Bicentenary Celebration Fund. By means of the "Sentinel" he kept in touch with affairs in the district, which he left in his early manhood and which he always regarded as his home district. Mr. Alexander was a bachelor.

The funeral will take place on Sunday there being a service at the West London Synagogue in the morning, followed by the interment at Golders Green Jewish Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at the West London Synagogue the same evening. The Stoke-on-Trent Jewish Community will be represented at the funeral by Mr. Colman Sumberg (President).
