Selma (Sally) Caruso Loveland passed away on October 31, 2022. She was 95.

Sally was one of a kind, softhearted with a splash of saucy. She loved to laugh and never lost the twinkle in her eye. Her five children and their families will miss her dearly.

Born in Suffern, New York, she married Anthony Caruso during World War II while he was on leave from the U.S. Navy. They raised their children through the next five decades, living predominantly in Miami, Florida, and Closter, New Jersey, before moving to South Jersey.

Although she worked part time over the years, Sally devoted her energies to keeping the home fires burning. She could always be found in the kitchen. Nearby, there was usually a pot of her signature spaghetti sauce brewing on the stove. In between conversation, she would step away to stir or add "a little bit of this, some of that if you have it." Without cookbooks or guidance, she learned to cook in her own way and created robust meals that brought the family together every night.

Nurturing connections remained a priority throughout her life. In addition to her children, she maintained ties with longtime friends and her beloved sisters, Anna and "Snookie." She was the link to a close group of friends originating from Tony's Navy days. They shared their lives at house gatherings and ship reunions, and by staying in touch individually.

After Tony passed away, Sally met and married James Loveland and moved to Lumberton. She and Jim enjoyed time with her family, now grown. "Mom" was the central source of information, making sure everyone knew when there was need for support. She and Jim also spent time with his relatives. This late-in-life marriage brought new friends and adventure as they camped, volunteered, and frequented antique car shows in his 1961 Ford Galaxie.

Long interested in fashion, Sally had a personal style that evolved over the years. She loved to shop for family, friends, herself, and the house. Always keeping an eye out for gifts, she had a knack for finding too-good-to-be-true bargains. She gardened, decorated, exercised, and danced, especially fond of the fox trot. Among recent volunteer activities, she was secretary of the Marine Corps League Auxiliary, and crafted and cooked for many fundraisers.

She is survived by her five children and their spouses: Frances and Ronald Connelly of Ouaquaga, NY, Anthony and Sidney Caruso of Pawleys Island, SC, Daniel Caruso and Barry Stephen of Provincetown, MA, Donna and Scott Bowden of Deep River, CT, and Steven and Colleen Caruso of Jobstown, NJ. She is also survived by her grandchildren Thomas, Anthony, Jr., Joseph, Antonio, Acacia, Dominic, and Isabelle, and great-grandchildren Nathan, Sierra, River, and Penelope. She was predeceased by her husbands and her dear granddaughter Susan Connelly.

The family will hold a private burial service.

Services entrusted to Moore Funeral Home, 371 Lakehurst Road, Browns Mills, NJ.
