William Bowen Campbell was born on January 1, 1895 in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee, the son of Lemuel Russell Campbell (1859–1942) and Johnnie (Marshall) Campbell (1870–1923).

He was educated at Allace University School in Nashville, Webb School in Bell Buckle and attended Vanderbilt University, then taught at Webb School before receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Michigan. A US Navy veteran who served in France during World War I, he was discharged in 1919 and then served as an instructor at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts.

In 1923 he studied in France at the University of Grenoble, then later - from 1932 to 1934 - he was in Spain, before returning to Nashville when the Spanish Revolution started.

A retired teacher who was living at 906 5th Avenue South, William was 70 years old and a widower when he died on March 14, 1965 at home of a probable heart attack.
