The Bride of Death - At 8 o'clock on the night of the twenty-ninth of June, 1892, in the First Presbyterian church occurred one of the most brilliant weddings that have ever taken place in this city. It was the wedding of Joseph Brand Whitlock, political correspondent of the Chicago Herald, and Miss Susie Lamb Brainerd, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gideon R. Brainerd, of this city. The guests in that brilliant assemblage little dreamed that the lovely bride, surrounded with all the bravery of the bridal party, and in her young and fresh beauty, would in a few short weeks be the bride of death. But such, alas, is the case, Mrs. Whitlock dying at her home, No. 3852 Vincennes street, Chicago, at 9 o'clock last night.
The deceased was born in this city in 1874, and had always resided here. She was but a few days more than 18 years of age when she was married. She had for a long time been one of the members of Springfield's leading society circles and was a most amiable and sweet young lady. The news of her illness was received by her many friends about six weeks ago, and her mother went to Chicago and has been there ever since. About two weeks ago Mrs. Whitlock underwent a very delicate surgical operation, from the effects of which she never recovered. Besides her husband she is survived by her father and mother, four brothers and one sister: Legh K., Benjamin H., James L. and Albert E., and Miss Ella Brainerd, all of this city. Her father and brother, Ben. H. Brainerd, and wife, were preparing to go to Chicago last night upon a receipt of a telegram announcing the dangerous condition of Mrs. Whitlock, when they received a second one announcing her death. The remains will be brought to this city for interment some time tomorrow.
