Burial Feb. 10.∼This is apparently the former slave of Gov. John Hancock, who was freed at the age of 30. He was mentioned in a letter from John Hancock to his brother Ebenezer, written in London on 27 December 1760: "how does Cato behave." Cato later received a cap and French horn as gifts. He is presumably the Cato Hancock who married Phebe Baker in Boston on 25 Nov 1789, and also Nancy Faddy in Boston on 3 July 1791. Cato Hancock paid poll taxes in Medford over several years during the 1770s and 1780s, though his real estate taxes were negligible to non-existent.
