Robert Shankland Dodge was the Son of a traveling Preacher Jerial Dodge by his wife Elizabeth Washington née Spotswood he was living last known with his mother Eliza and a younger brother John Washington Dodge in 1850 Pulaski County, Missouri, he moved with his next oldest brother Josiah Dodge to Grass Valley, Nevada County, California he and his brother Josiah Dodge were arrested in 1865 for the murder of Mark Hammock, Josiah was later acquitted of the wrong doing but Bob was tried and found guilty of the crime which he claimed his innocence, he made a statement at his hanging.
 On 8 November 1866 he was Hung for the murder of Mark Hammock.
