John Washington Dodge was the youngest of ten children, the seventh son, born to The Reverend Jerial and Elizabeth Washington (Spotswood) Dodge.

The Jerial Dodge family was the only Dodge family living in Washington County, Tennessee as enumerated in the 1840 federal census, where John stated in his Soldier's Application for a Pension, he was born 21 Jul 1839. In an 1850 census, John is shown at age 10 with his mother, Eliza W. Dodge.

Following in a long line of military Veterans, John too was a Veteran, of the Civil War. His war record has been documented in an excellent and comprehensive research entitled, The Civil War Experience of John Washington Dodge by Robert David Todd. http://etpw10.wix.com/john-washinton-dodge
