William Steward was born in Pennsylvania (or "at sea," according to daughter, Esther Heater, in the 1880 census of Shelby County, Missouri). William's parents came from Ireland. William married Sarah Arment in Vermillion County, Indiana on August 15, 1841 in Vermillion County, Indiana. Daughter, Esther, was born in Fountain County, Indiana in 1844 and son, Andrew, was born in Vermillion County, Indiana in 1846. By 1850, the family had moved to Vermilion County, Illinois. Their children included: Jonathan, Esther, Andrew, Mary J. born about 1848 and died before the 1860 census of Vermilion County, Illinois, Sarah Ann, Maria "May" (1853-1886) who married Rev. Riley C. Grace and moved to Texas, and William "Billy" M., who married Laura Jane Anderson. Family records show a child called Nettie, who may be the same as Mary J.--perhaps Mary Jeannette.

Since William and Sarah Steward lived most of their married life in Vermilion County, it seems likely that Sarah is also buried in this cemetery, which is not far from where they were living in the 1880 census in South Homer Township in Champaign County.

Son, Billy, and Laura Steward had six sons and helped rear Alonzo and a cousin, Lillian Lucille Harris Dickey (Memorial #61432420), daughter of Jasper L. Harris and Elvira Rhodes. Laura and her second husband, Frank B. Hand, helped rear Dorothy Watkins born about 1920, who married a Clayton.
