Henry Sewell was born in Essex, England, March 22, 1819 and came to the USA when a young man. On April 9, 1843, he joined the first wagon train for Oregon, He drove a team for David Lenox across the plains.
In Oregon City, Henry Sewell met and married Mary Anne Jones Garrish. In 1846 they settled on a donation claim of 640 acres 2 miles north of Hillsboro, Oregon. Five children were born to them: James Henry, Laura, John Wellington, Mary and Anne.
Henry Sewell helped to organize the first Baptist church west of the Rocky Mountains. The West Union Baptist Church Near Hillsboro, founded May 25,1844.
