Grover Vandruff, son of Martin and Sarah Vandruff, was born June 9, 1893, near McLouth, and passed away April 18, 1954, at Wadsworth Veterans Hospital.
Grover spent his entire boyhood near McLouth. He enlisted in the National Guard in April, 1915. He served with his company on guard duty at the Mexican border prior to World War I. He was among the first U.S. troops to arrive in France at the beginning of World War I, and remained with the 35th Infantry Division for the duration of the war. He was honorably discharged in April, 1919. Among his citations was the Purple Heart, which he treasured.
He was united in marriage with Lila M. Shrader on March 11, 1922. To this union were born seven children.
Besides his wife, he will be sadly missed by his two daughters, Mrs. Esther McAfee of Williamsburg, and Mrs. Alberta Miller of the home. Five sons include Grover, Jr., of Kansas City, Marlin of Travis Air Force Base, Calif., Gerald, David and Larry of the home. Also surviving are one aunt, Mrs. Lillian Pouppirt, Portland, Ore., six grandchildren, a number of nieces and nephews.
The funeral was held April 21 in the United Brethren church, conducted by Rev. Ira Brammell of Perry, assisted by Rev. Louis Nelson of the Baptist church. Music was furnished by Mr. and Mrs. Claude Kimmel, accompanied by Mrs. Winifred Turner of Tonganoxie. Buried with military honors in the Wild Horse Cemetery near McLouth, Williams-Kesinger American Legion, 393 McLouth and Larner-Seagraves Post, Oskaloosa, in charge.
