ROBERT CROMBIE, EX-JS CITY EDITORE, DIES AT AGE 92

Robert J. Crombie, 92, former city editor of the Peoria Journal Star for 21 years, died at 6:20 a. m. Monday in Methodist Medical Center, where he had been a patient since Dec. 13.

He lived at 1505 W. Main St. (originally 2406, our family owned the home for 63 years).City editor from 1939 to 1960, he was writer of a column "Odds and Ends," which appeared in the morning edition of the paper beginning in 1960. His column was devoted to Peoria's rich historical background and observations about interesting people.
He attended the University of Illinois and Columbia University. His newspaper career included stints as Peoria correspondent at Camp Dodge in Des Moines during World War I, reporter and city editor of the Des Moines Evening Tribune, part-time University of Illinois correspondent for the Champaign Gazette and courthouse reporter for the Journal Star.

Born March 5, 1895, in Peoria to John and Olive Dehority Crombie, he married Amelia Smith Sept. 8 1921, in Peoria. (They were maried in a hospital room at Methodist Hospital, Amelia was very ill and not expected to live so the wedding was held there) Surviving are his wife; one daughter, Barbara Crombie of Peoria; one son, Robert J. Jr. of Peoria(my grandfather); two grandchildren(my father and aunt)Lloyd ALan, and Elizabeth Marie; and four great-grandchildren(My eldest sister-Janelle Marie, my older brother-Daniel Edward, myself(Amelia's namesake)Amelia Ann.(My mother was expecting my younger brother) and my eldest cousin-Bryon Eugene).

He was a memebr of First United Methodist Church and Peoria Historical Society, where he served as vice president.

Services will be at 1:30p.m. Wednesday at Wright & Salmon Mortuary, the Rev. John Stanley officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight and also one hour before services on Wednesday at the mortuary. Memorials may be meade to the Peoria Historical Society.

My grandfather was a towering man, just like his father John Crombie, Peoria's tallest patrol officer! Just before his death he ordered a new pair of shoes....size 14 double wide...Moser's shoe store in Peoria that still has my great-grandfathers shoes on the shelf because noone will buy them!

He was Son of Olive Bell Dehority and John Crombie. He was the grandson of William and Mary J. Montgomery Crombie and Avery F. and Matilda Jane Cross Dehority. He is the great-grandson of Marcus Crombie and George Washington and Mary Draper Dehority.
