KARL M. MILLER
(1922 - 2008)

Karl M. Miller, age 85, of 1234 Westwood Lane, Manitowoc, died on Wednesday morning, Feb. 13, 2008, at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center, Manitowoc.

He was born on Oct. 13, 1922, in Kaukauna, son of the late Herman and Viola (Lemke) Miller. On May 4, 1946, he married the former Betty Barkley in Milwaukee. She preceded him in death on March 20, 2006.

(As stated in the Profiles in History from 1999 by Marge Miley) He came to Manitowoc from Eau Claire in 1951 to teach orchestra at Lincoln and the elementary schools. Encouraged by William Steinburg, conductor of the Buffalo Symphony, he chose Manitowoc because he believed the city would support a civic symphony orchestra, which he founded that same year. The board of the Manitowoc School of Vocational and Adult Education agreed to sponsor an orchestra. Musicians were recruited, and rehearsals began in the fall of 1951. The new orchestra's first concert was in May of 1952, and it was a benefit to raise funds for a community bandshell. Miller conducted the orchestra for its first 35 years, retiring in 1986. The Vocational and Adult Education Board continued its sponsorship for 18 years, and then it was assumed by the city of Manitowoc. Admission to the orchestra's two yearly concerts were free, and they were presented in Lincoln High School auditorium. The Manitowoc Symphony Orchestra Association Incorporated was organized early in 1954. It raised funds to help pay outside musicians to play in the orchestra and for guest soloists.

He grew up in Kaukauna, moving to Madison when he was a freshman in high school. He played in both the band and orchestra in high school, and in the Madison Symphony Orchestra, and he also led one of the most popular big bands in the area. His instrument was the trumpet. He entered the U.S. Air Force in 1942, and played in the 16th Air Force Band until 1946. He graduated with honors from the University of Wisconsin School of Music in Madison in 1949 and taught in Eau Claire for two years before coming to Manitowoc.

Miller continued to make his home in Manitowoc, and has played trumpet in the Lakeshore Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble and The Biggest of the Big Bands at the University of Wisconsin-Manitowoc since 1988. He enjoyed sailing, racing Lightnings with his son, Kurt, before he retired and on the Meershaum with his son, Mark, after his retirement. He also enjoyed traveling to Arizona with Betty to watch spring training and watch Mark's high school baseball teams. He was also an avid tennis player until he was 82 years old.

Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law: Mark Miller, Manitowoc, and Kurt and Kathryn Miller, Kohler; two grandchildren: Alison (Joe) Johnson, Sheboygan Falls, and Lauren Miller, Kohler; and a great-granddaughter: Katelynn Johnson. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter: Megan Barkley Miller; and a brother: David Miller.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008, at The Pfeffer Funeral Home & Cremation Care Center, Manitowoc. Officiating at the service will be the Rev. Steven Solberg, with burial at Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc.

The family will greet relatives and friends at The Pfeffer Funeral Home & Cremation Care Center, Manitowoc, from 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008, until the time of service at noon.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Vince Lombardi Cancer Care Center, American Cancer Society, or Lakeshore Wind Ensemble Association.

The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the Vince Lombardi Cancer Care Center and Dr. Barylak and his staff for their care given to Karl.
