Martha was the second child of Robert Wheelhouse and Hannah Scott. When her parents and siblings immigrated to the US at around 1826 (sister Hannah was born in Marsden England in 1824 and sister Hannah in Ohio circa 1828) she stayed behind and looked after her widowed grandfather Samuel. When he died in 1839 he left her six silver spoons in his will. Her duties completed Martha married George Sutlcliffe the following year and had four children.
