In 1858 her family moved from Yancey County, North Carolina to Gilmer County, Georgia. She is listed in the 1860 Georgia census records as a daughter of Alexander and Rebecca Blankenship.

Family records indicate she went by the name "Peggy". Gilmer County marriage records show a "Peggy" Blankenship married Isaac Ballew November 19, 1874. She was his second wife.

By 1880 they were living in the Ball Ground community in Murray County, Georgia with their three children:

Hiram Ballew (1877 - )
Rebecca Ballew (1878 - )
