Mrs. Hill was born on Friday, April 13, 1928, in the family home in Henderson County, North Carolina, to the late Joseph Henry and Ollie Isabell (Thompson) Howse. While working as a nurse at Western Carolina, she first met the late Dr. Paul E. "Pete" Hill, whom she later married while she was employed as a nurse at Duke University where he was attending medical school. Early in their marriage, Dr. and Mrs. Hill lived in Atlanta, Georgia; Enka, North Carolina; Murphy, North Carolina; and Charlotte, North Carolina before moving to Hendersonville in 1970. She worked as a Registered Nurse at Grady Hospital in Atlanta, Bellevue Hospital in New York City and Mercy Hospital in Charlotte and finished her nursing career helping her husband in his medical practice until their retirement in 1991.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Hill was preceded in death by two brothers, Harry and Arthur Howse, and three sisters, Annette Wilson, Wanda Carter, and Polly Waters.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory her son, Paul, and his wife, Dorcas, of Johnson City, Tennessee; her daughter, Kathryn Vanderslice, and her husband, Scott, of Salisbury, North Carolina; four grandchildren, Mark Vanderslice and his wife, Jennifer, Tyler Vanderslice and his wife, Amber, Brittany Soques and her husband, Danny, and Jennifer Grace Hill; ten great-grandchildren, Scottlyn and Dylan Vanderslice, Asaph, Rowan, Crew, Corban, and Piper Vanderslice and Carter, Cameron and Caylee Soques. In addition she leaves behind a niece, Anna Mae Thomas, considered a sister, and her husband, Gwynn, along with many nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Hill was a devoted wife and mother whose greatest earthly joy was her family. She loved the Lord, her family, her friends and her church. Her many interests included flower gardening, playing bridge, reading, water skiing into her 70's and dancing with Pete, her husband of 60 years. She enjoyed people and never seemed to meet a stranger.
Although her family will miss her dearly, they are comforted by her repeated expression of contentment through the years, often saying, "If I die tomorrow, it's okay. I've had a wonderful life, and I am ready." To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord, where she is now, along with her beloved Pete. Those who put their trust in the Lord will one day join them.
Vera was blessed to live at home until shortly before her death, with the help of her loving caregivers, Joyce Justice and Mary Spanton.
A service worshiping the Lord and honoring Vera's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 27, 2022, at Covenant Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Steve Mirich officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service, from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m., in the church sanctuary. Burial will follow at Shepherd Memorial Park.
