James Earl Lerke, 82, a resident of Albuquerque, NM and a former lifelong resident of Tucumcari, NM passed away on Sunday, February 17, 2008. Services will be held at First Christian Church, at 1701 S. 4th St. in Tucumcari, NM at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 23, 2008.
Jim's family homesteaded in the late 1800's near Tucumcari, NM where he was born and raised.
Jim served in the United States Navy in World War II, on the U.S.S. Enterprise, as a Radarman 1st Class.
After the war, he returned to Tucumcari, NM and spent 39 years with the Southern Pacific Railroad as a Brakeman/Conductor. In conjunction, he spent 53 years as a member of the United Transportation Union.
For over 50 years, he served as a volunteer for Everyone's Federal Credit Union, where he received the "Hall of Fame" and "Above and Beyond" awards for exemplary service. Under Jim's leadership as Chairman of the Board of Directors, the Credit Union provided EFCU members and employees with a newly renovated facility that reflects the credit union's history and continued success for the future. In addition, Jim was instrumental in the Credit Union opening a branch office in Santa Rosa, NM working hand in hand with his dearest friend, Andi Baum.
Jim was a Life Member of of Elks Lodge #1172, A Board Member of the Tucumcari Historical Research Institute, and "Wagon Master" of the Tucumsams Chapter of the Good Sam Club. He was also an accomplished wood carver with many awards, and active in the Six-Shooter carving club.
Jim is survived by his children: Lynn Mosher and her husband Jerry; Michael Lerke and his wife Wanda; and Todd Lerke and his fiancee Delasaria Lihon, all of Albuquerque, NM.
Grandchildren; Michael Barnes, Darren Barnes and wife Francine, Layla Linn, James Mosher and wife Jessica, Miranda Lerke, Robin and James Horcasitas, Robbie Bogard, Misty Bogard and her daughter Taylor, and David Bogard: Great-grandchildren; Jon Paul Marquez, Renton Barnes, and Cadence Mosher.
Also surviving are his stepsons, Bill Bogard and wife Jan, Bruce Bogard and his wife Louella.
Jim is preceded in death by his wife Elsie Lerke and sister, Earlene Inman.
Pall bearers will be Michael Barnes; Darren Barnes, James Mosher, Jon Paul Marquez, Bill Bogard, Bruce Bogard and Robbie Bogard.
Honorary Pall bearers are Victor Baum, Jack Birch, Bill Tausworthe, Marlin Terry, Walt Creed and Laverne Moore in memory of J. T. Moore.
Arrangements are by Dunn Funeral Home of Tucumcari, NM. In lieu of flowers, contibutions may be made to the Tucumcari Historical Research Institute.
