Television Producer, Television Writer, Television Executive. Best remembered as the creator of the classic ABC television series, "The Addams Family" (1964 to 1966). Born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Levy attended the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) and began his career in radio. After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II (WWII), he entered the advertising industry, working for Young & Rubicon and eventually being promoted to vice president. By the mid to late 1950s, Levy joined the burgeoning TV industry by starting out with one of the three major networks, NBC. Soon after, he was named Vice President of Programming for NBC in 1959. He greenlit and oversaw the success of classic TV shows like: "Bonanza," "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" & "Dr. Kildare" during his tenure at NBC. In the early 1960s, he left NBC for ABC at the height of U.S. Senate investigations into violence, language and sex on television. While at ABC, he successfully pitched to the network, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) Television and the TV production company, Filmways Inc. a TV sitcom adaption of "The Addams Family" cartoons. Adapted from The New Yorker magazine cartoons by Charles Addams, the macabre show aired in 1964 competed with the similarly themed series, "The Munsters" for ratings at the time, garnered a dedicated fan following in the decades since it first aired, resulting in a franchise that spawned numerous films, TV series, animated spin-offs and a Netflix series. Other series he was involved in after The Addams Family were "The Pruitts of Southampton" & "Sarge." Levy also served as executive director of The Caucus of Producers-Writers-Directors in a 20 year tenure. He died at his home in Beverly Hills. He was 87.
