This Memorial has been created in honor of Mr Mario Fierros by the Memorial Group of Cortez High School, Arizona. Identities of living relatives has been suppressed for their privacy.
Mario Fierros passed away peacefully in his home on December 25, 2022 at the age of 96. Mario's life was plainly marked by his faith and his love for God and the family who will miss him greatly. Mario was called home to heaven just past midnight on Christmas morning, missing only the first ten minutes of Jesus' birthday celebration in heaven. Mario was born in 1926 in Douglas, Arizona to Miguel and Ines Castellanos Fierros and was the oldest of three siblings. He led the way, graduating from Douglas High School. Mario worked for a few years selling shoes and men's clothing. After getting fed up with his work, Mario set out for Arizona State University and obtained his degree with a Minor in History. Mario also found his mate in college and, immediately after graduation, he married in the summer of 1958. Their 64 years of married life saw them travel the world. Those travels included some early surprises. Mario began his teaching career in Superior, Arizona, and joked for years that this established him as a Superior teacher. He soon found a better opportunity teaching in the Glendale Unified School District at Cortez High School and moved to Phoenix. He taught Spanish at Cortez High for three decades. Mario's determination and talent were plainly seen early in that career when, as a father of 5, he received his Master's Degree in Spanish from A.S.U. in 1965. This came before online classes and was one of his two proudest career achievements. Mario had old school values and a young, adventurous heart. Bring on the surprises. Mario worked with the Peace Corps for two summers by driving his family to Montana (in a red VW microbus!) where he taught Spanish to aspiring Peace Corps workers. Mario was very proud to have served as the national director of the SHH (Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica) for six years. Mario led the national organization with remarkable dedication during a time when the SHH experienced tremendous growth in American high schools. Mario believed in stepping up to serve when he could be helpful, and his years serving as Director of the SHH were filled with effort and achievement. Always ready to serve, Mario championed causes in the Catholic community and belonged to the Legion of Mary for decades. With his wife, Mario was unrelenting in promoting efforts to increase the saying of the rosary and helping with delivery of communion to the sick and elderly. He was a devout Catholic and member of St. Louis the King Parish for over 60 years. Late in his career, Mario also taught Spanish at Glendale Community College for several years before retiring. He always enjoyed classical music, traveling, gardening, stamp collecting, photography, cooking his famous pozole, and family.
Mario was preceded in death by his parents, son Albert Joseph Fierros (1962-1981) and his brother Ramon (1927-2022).
He is survived by sons, daughters, sister; 5 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at St. Louis the King Catholic Church, 4331 W. Maryland Avenue, Glendale, Arizona on Wednesday, January 4, 2023 with visitation starting at 9:00 am followed by Rosary at 10:30 and funeral mass at 11:00 am. Committal will follow at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, 9925 W. Thomas Rd. immediately after the funeral mass.
