She later became the protégé of her close friend Lucille Ball who encouraged her to change her name from Mildred to her stage name Carole. Some of her notable television guest appearances include "The Lucy Show," "Here's Lucy," "Maude," "Cagney & Lacey," and "Dynasty." Her best-known movie roles were for playing Don Knotts' wife in "The Incredible Mr. Limpet" in 1964 and as Molly Ringwald's Grandma Helen in "Sixteen Candles" in 1984. She also appeared on the theatrical stage in various productions during the 1970s and 1980s. She was a long-time supporter of the LGBTQ community and advocate for HIV/AIDS.
