Joseph Furnace was born in Georgia to Benjamin and Eliza Collins Furnace. Indians killed his family. He and a sister hid and were the only survivors. They were taken in by a family and had to work hard for their keep. He left at 18, going to east Texas, he was taken in by the widow Elizabeth Elliott..called Grandma Betty. One of her children was Columbus(Lum) B. Elliott who was to marry Joseph's oldest daughter, Emma, in later years. He stayed there about 2 years. He arrived in Bell Co., in 1853. He worked as a hired hand for the widow, Nancy S. Wright Ferguson. He would later be married to her youngest daughter, Nancy Caroline, Sept.16, 1858 by the Rev. John Carpenter.Joseph was a stock herder and pony trader. He and Nancy Caroline were the parents of Emma Wright, Joseph Benjamin, William, Eliza Pauline, Alice Eldridge, Dovey Anna, and James Irvin.
