Highball was the German Sheperd dog that belonged to John May who was murdered in the St. Valentines Day Massacre on February 14th, 1929, Chicago, Il. 10:30 am. Highball was the lone survivor & only witness to the massacre. Chained & trapped, this poor soul had to endure witnessing the entire incident & then to sit in the garage amongst the aftermath until the police arrived. On entering the warehouse, they found the dog howling, trembling, terrified & nervous, trapped under a beer truck and the floor covered with blood, shell casings, and corpses. Most likely the wailing from Highball alerted nearby neighbors to the garage.

Different archival reports have him being adopted by one of the reporters, this was later denounced & it is said Highball was so distraught after the massacre that it was decided he was to be "put down." Innocent victim of a terrible situation.
