Fleeing the oncoming Nazi scourge during the short period when Jewish citizens were still being encouraged to leave Nazi-controlled countries, Adolf boarded a ship and travelled to Palestine, where she was detained alongside 1,800 other European Jewish refugees aboard the SS Patria, in Haifa's port. Tragically, the Patria became the target of Jewish extremist group Haganah, which planted a bomb below the crowded ship, intending to disable it to prevent the deportation of refugees. Instead, the ship suffered massive damage; it sank in 16 minutes, killing an estimated 260 people --- at least 210 Jewish refugees, and 50 British crew and guards.

"SS "Patria" was carrying about 1800 Jewish refugees from Nazi-occupied Europe. The British authorities were deporting them from Mandatory Palestine to Mauritius because they lacked entry permits. Zionist organizations opposed the deportation, and the underground paramilitary Haganah group planted a bomb intended to disable the ship to prevent it from leaving Haifa.

The Haganah claims to have miscalculated the effects of the explosion. The bomb blew the steel frame off one full side of the ship and the ship sank in less than 16 minutes, trapping hundreds in the hold. The British allowed the survivors to remain in Palestine on humanitarian grounds.

Who was responsible and the true reason why "Patria" sank remained a controversial mystery until 1957, when Munya Mardor, the man who planted the bomb, published a book about his experiences. Read more at wrecksite: https://www.wrecksite.eu/wreck.aspx?292401" (source: wrecksite.eu)
