Like her siblings before her, Dorothy left Alabama and joined most of them in Ohio. She lived in Hamilton Ohio, than relocated permanently to Dayton.
On May 19, 1951, she married Herbert Nathaniel Hamilton and to this union they had a daughter, Elizabeth. Dorothy and Herbert were married for 45 years until his death in 1996.
Dorothy was a faithful member of Wayman Chapel AME Church. During her membership, she served in many capacities: Willing Workers, charter member of the Nurses' Guild, Class Leader, Trustee Board member, Kitchen Manager, assisted in Sunday School and member of the Lay Organization, Stewardess Board #3 and Missionary Society. Dorothy served the Dayton community from 1960 – 1988 as a Nurse's Assistant with Good Samaritan Hospital where she specialized in Orthopedics.
She is preceded in death by parents, Gideon and Pearl Rumph; husband, Herbert Hamilton; siblings, Causia Walker, Missouri (Sue) Tyson, JD, John, Sonny and Lamar Rumph; a niece, Marguerite Hickman; aunts, Mary Tyson and Savannah (Lukie) Broadus; and a dear friend, Ola Kay Thomas.
Dorothy leaves to cherish her memory her daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and William Rutledge; grandson, Sterling Rutledge; niece, Harriet (Steve) Doolittle; cousin, William (Christine) Wiley; devoted friends: Sylvia Younger Clayborne (of 78 years), as well as Dorothy Hastings, Isabel Glover and Frances Lunderman; a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
