A.G. Atwater Sr., 87, retired senior vice president for the William Wrigley Jr. Co., worked for the chewing gum firm from 1933 to 1975 and was its vice president of sales.

A resident of Santa Monica, Calif. and formerly of Chicago's Near North Side, he died at home Saturday.

"He was much loved by the trade," said his son, A.G. Jr. "He did very much for the confectionery trade and, as a result, was elected to the Candy and Tobacco Hall of Fame."

His father, Bert, had been associated with the chewing gum firm since 1907 and also had been its vice president.

Mr. Atwater graduated from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. In World War II, he was a commander in the Navy and served for a period as head of the Office of Strategic Services for the Middle East Theater.

Under Mr. Atwater, Wrigley's sales program focused on point of sale purchases, attempting to offer Wrigley chewing gum up front and on counters in every store possible.

"He got around and people responded to him," his son said. "I believe many people picked up on selling the product simply because they liked him."

After he retired from the Navy as a captain, Mr. Atwater was instrumental in bringing the U-505 German submarine to the Museum of Science and Industry.

Mr. Atwater was past president of the Tavern Club and the Post and Paddock Club at Arlington Racetrack.

Other survivors include a daughter, Claire Atwater Stuart; another son, Bert; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Services will be private. Chicago Tribune September 03, 1997
