Samuel Hinds enlisted Sep. 21, 1864 at Scranton, Luzerne [now Lackawanna] County PA, for one year service, and was mustered in with Co. I, 199th Pennsylvania Infantry the following day, Sep. 22, 1864 at the same location. The 199th Pennsylvania Infantry was ordered to the field the same month and proceeded to Deep Bottom Landing VA, on the James River, and was assigned to the 1st Brigade, 1st Division of the 10th Army Corps, Army of the James. They took position upon the extreme right of the line of the Army of the James, on the New Market Road. In Nov. (day not given) he was reported absent and sick at base. He was removed to the US General Hospital at Fortress Monroe VA on Nov. 21, 1864, where he died from typhoid fever on Nov. 27, 1864.
