Clara Harman Stewart, 94, of LaGrange died Wednesday, September 27, 2006, at Florence Hand Home. Mrs. Stewart was born December 21, 1911, in Carrollton, the second child and daughter of the late William Virgil and Kate Strickland Harman. After graduating from Carrollton public schools, she married and moved with her husband to LaGrange. Together they started Stewart Grocery Company, later renamed Stewart Wholesale Hardware Company, and she remained active in the business until her retirement at 72. She was a member of the Mary Will Thompson Sunday School Class of First United Methodist Church and Highland Country Club. She played gold into her eighties and bridge until her death.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Wiley Stewart, Sr.; a sister, Ethel Harman Manley; a brother, William Marion Harman; and a step-daughter, Clare Stewart Moore and Clare's husband and children, George, Bruce, and Andrew Moore.

Clara treasured her independence, and with the support of her LaGrange family, was able to live alone at home until her final illness. She loved people, enjoyed life, and was blessed with many friends. These friends, some a generation younger than she, kept her a part of their activities, even as her health failed. They visited her when she was ill, and when she had healed, they included her in the monthly golfers' luncheons, bridge sessions, and Friday night dinners at the club. Such kindnesses enriched her life and made it possible for her to remain active until her death. The Stewart family thanks all of them.

Survivors include her stepdaughter, Caroline Stewart Swett and her husband, Trevor W. Swett, Jr. of Bethesda, Maryland; daughters, Patricia Lou Stewart of Athens and Ellen Stewart Davidson and her husband, James William Davidson of LaGrange; a son, John W. Stewart, Jr. and his wife, Ann Freeman of LaGrange; six grandchildren, Marjorie, Trevor III, and John Swett of Maryland, Andrea Davidson Hunter of Warner Robins, Trina Stewart Alexander and Alecia Stewart Davidson of LaGrange; seven great grandchildren, Trevor IV, Brooks, and Caroline Swett, Tristain Daugherty, Lauren and Trey Hunter, and Cameron Alexander; two sisters, Thelma Harman Turner and Florence Harman Ford both of Carrollton.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Saturday, September 30, 2006, at First United Methodist Church with Dr. Harold Lawrence and Reverend Dane Wagner officiating. Burial will follow in Shadowlawn Cemetery.
