Politician. Bączkowski served as the Polish minister of labor and social policy from Feb. 7, 1996 until his death on Nov. 7, 1996. A graduate of the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University with a law degree, Bączkowski was an assistant at the Department of Labor Law at the Faculty of Law and Administration from 1978 to 1988. He became active in the trade union Solidarity and was briefly imprisoned in 1982. He became a legal adviser in the 1980s, eventually working in the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy. He served as the ministry's deputy minister from 1991 until 1996, when he acted as minister until his death from a heart attack. He was posthumously awarded the Officer's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta and the Cross of Freedom and Solidarity.
