Benesz served in the People's Republic of Poland Parliament in the second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth terms of the Sejm from 1957 to 1976, acting as deputy speaker in the fifth and sixth terms from 1971 to 1976. During that time, he also acted as chairman of the Polish Democratic Party from 1973 to 1976. A graduate with a law degree from Jagiellonian University, Benesz fought in the Home Army during World War II. In 1945, he joined the Democratic Party, and held several top positions, including secretary of the Communist Party in Szczecin, Koszalin, and Gdańsk from 1947 to 1971. Outside of politics, Benesz was the president of the Polish Sailing Association from 1973 to 1976.
