He served in the Union Army as a Private in Company F, 40th Infantry Regiment, Indiana Volunteers. He enrolled 19 Dec 1863 at Northfield, Boone Co, Indiana to serve 3 years and mustered in 28 Dec 1863. He suffered a gunshot wound to his right ankle on 18 Jul 1864. [Probably at the Battle at Nancy's Creek; the date is consistent in his file, but the place variously described.] It grew worse and he was transferred to General Hospital #2 at Nashville where he died of pyaemia (blood poisoning) 22 Jul 1864.
