The son of Peter & Mary (Waggoner - Snyder also reported) Rickabaugh, he married Amelia Anna Eastep December 14, 1853, in Spruce Creek, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, and fathered Edward Nelson (b. 09/23/54), William James (b. 07/02/56), Lewis Irwin (b. 08/05/58), Mary Etta Catherine (b. 02/14/61 - married Henry Snook), John Lyon (b. 02/18/63), Emily Grant (b. 10/02/66), Anna Amanda (b. 03/23/69), Rhoda Alice (b. 09/15/71 - married Henry Cyrus Miller), Walter Charles (b. 09/18/74), Clara Rebekah (b. 11/10/76, d. 01/27/80), and there may have been others. Although he is in the 1863-65 draft registration residing in Mifflin Township, Cumberland County, in 1860 he may have yet been living in Huntingdon County. He stood 6' 0" tall and had black hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of thirty-five in Hollidaysburg, Blair County, February 28, 1865, and mustered into federal service that day as a private with the 77th Pennsylvania Infantry in the second organization of Co. F. Promoted to corporal March 9, 1865, he honorably discharged by general order to date September 14, 1865.
