My maternal great-grandfather was the son of a British immigrant who farmed the river bottoms on White River below Hazleton. By the 1930's, they lived near Francisco on Highway 64, four miles east of Princeton. David married the granddaughter of an Irish immigrant, TJ McEllhiney, who was also a farmer in this area. David and Ruth were married in the McEllhiney home the day after Christmas 1907. David took to farming and set up his home on Wheeling Road just before the Patoka River bottoms, where he lived out his entire adult life. Ruth left him in 1938, under conspicuous circumstances, leaving their four youngest, including my grandmother, home with their father. The Dunning farm remained in the family and was home to an annual reunion on the weekend closest to Grandpa Dunning's birthday every October until 2017. He was survived by eight of his nine children. He never remarried after Ruth's departure and forbid her from having contact with their children.
