Maria D'Arazio was born on July 19, 1899 in Castel Baronia, Avellino, Campagnia, Italy. At the age of 20, she boarded a ship called the Cretic, which was bound for the United States of America. It was her intention to join her sister who was living in Boston, Massachusetts. She arrived on March 20th, 1920. Later that same year, she married Vincenzo Barrasso. They would have a daughter and five sons together, and their family lived on Paris Street in East Boston. Maria would be widowed at a very early age, when Vincenzo died from pneumonia in 1937. Maria went to work as a cook at the popular Giovino's Restaurant (Gio's) in Maverick Square in East Boston to support her children. In 1939, Maria became a naturalized citizen of the United States of America. "Mary" embraced her new country. Three of her sons would serve in WWII (Nicholas, Joseph, Anthony), and her youngest son, Frank, served in the U.S. Air Force after WWII. Maria lost her battle with leukemia in 1950, and was greatly missed by her children and extended family.
