Dorcas was born in Amherst, Hampshire County, Province of Massachusetts Bay, December 31, 1750. She was the 3rd of 8 children (5 sons and 3 daughters) born of Charles Wright (1719-1793) and his wife Ruth Boltwood (1722-1806). Dorcas's siblings were: Solomon (b. 1743), Samuel (b. 1745), Josiah (1752-1817), Sarah (b. 1757), Esther (b. 1760), and Solomon (1762-1837).

Dorcas married, about 1766, Elijah Wolcott (1742-1829) by whom she had 2 children (2 sons): Ebenezer (1769-1842), and Elijah (1771-1837).
