As most of you have heard, Vonne Prince Dawson. passed away as the result of a tragic car accident. She was the. daughter of Mickey and Jackie Prince.
It has been a sad experience for me as I am certain it has been for her family and countless other people.
I keep asking why? I wanted the perfect ending for Vonne's life. But, at my age, I have earned that some stories don't lave the perfect ending. Life is bout not knowing what comes next, about change, and viewing death as a celebration.
Thoughts and memories have flooded my mind since I heard news of her death. And you know, all the thoughts and memories of Vonne. are of pleasant, worthwhile and fulliling times. .'
I remember when she was born, one year after my son. She would have celebrated her 43rd birthday in May.
Looking back, I recall Vonne as a little girl with a cherub face and beautiful blonde curls. Even as an only child, she was caring, loving and giving and her manners were impeccable.
I kept up with her through the years and was impressed as she excelled in academics and also in music as she studied piano under Mrs. IB. Odell.
Once I gave her a necklace for a recital, It was such a small token for such a gifted musician.
Often I called on Vonne to share her musical talents with special needs clients at Evergreen Skills and with inmates at Dutchman Correctional Institution. Even with a busy school schedule, she always obliged and had an uncanny way of making the vocalists feel as is they were literally performing in Broadway productions. Her efforts allowed them to excel and become important for a few brief moments. But that was just Vonne.
After high school, Vonne went on to Presbyterian College where she graduated with honors and then to the University of South Carolina Law School. While practicing law, she was just a telephone call away, always willing to share legal knowledge and advice.
In more ways. than one, music filled her life as well as those who knew and loved her. Like a songbird, she brought happiness not only with musical notes, but with smiles, acts of kindness and advice.
Her children, . Sarah and Jack, were a special part of her life. I fondly recall her famIly visiting our barn and Vonne's smile as she watched her children ride the horses.
Perhaps God, in His infinite wisdom, Will allow her son and daughter to know the many wonderful deeds their mother performed throughout her life and how much she loved them. My prayer is that her music will somehow live on and echo in their lives both now and forever.Vonne, you are always in my heart and often on my mind. I hope that you can hear me when 1 say thank you.
Charlie Daniels wrote these words en route to the funeral of his friend, Ronnie Van Zant of the band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and I believe Vonne would think them an appropriate tribute also.
"So say it loud and let it ring… We are all a part of everything…The future, present and the past…
Fly on proud bird….You're free at last."
