Our 6th Cat

Randy was born outside and completely a feral cat. Never in his 15 years on this Earth did he interact with any human except my son and that took awhile for him to trust Michael. My neighbor Sandy and I first saw these four small kittens across the street back in the Summer of 2005. They looked to be about four months old. The next morning three of these kittens were gone except for this light tan kitten who came over to us for food. We found out later their mother (a petite black and white cat) was killed across the street by a pit bull and these poor kittens witnessed their mom being torn apart. This had a devastating effect on Randy's young life until he died. This poor kitten got kicked at by kids, water poured on him and older cats chasing him. One time a large black and white male cat was chasing Randy and he ran to me and scooted right up the leg to my shoulder. I brought Randy to our steps and let him hide under the lawn chair and fed him. My neighbor Sandy couldn't watch this happening anymore brought Randy in and he stayed there for the next 10 years until she died in 2015. Then I adopted Randy who was still very feral and as much as we tried to get him to trust us, he ran. Michael worked with him and after awhile Randy only trusted my son.

On my daughter's birthday, February 20th, did Randy show any signs of failing health. He was struggling to urinate and this was happening every 30 seconds in the kitty litter. Took him to the ER vet since it was at night on the weekend and they suspected Randy as having Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease. He was given medicines to relieve the symptoms which worked at first and then Randy relapsed. On February 29 we were back in ER. Blood test, x-rays and a scan was performed. No blockage but was given the same meds and an antibiotic this time. We didn't even finish the meds and for the 3rd time it started up again. I called in instead of going to the ER vet and they filled his meds and we picked them up. Before his symptoms returned again I got him to our regular vet and she took more blood tests. Randy was in the advanced stages of the disease and it would be only a matter of time before it takes his life. Meanwhile the 3 female cats were all sick with something irritating their throats and I figured out it must be the water. I began to boil our water for the cats and they started to recover. The vet put all 3 female cats on an antibiotic. So all the cats were on meds at the same time.

Randy was doing fine until around 8 p.m. (March 28th) and the straining started again. We had no choice but to put him down. My son was devastated. Randy died at 11:08 that night. Because Randy died during the outbreak of the Coronavirus (Covid-19), an animal being put down was done a lot differently. Randy was cremated on March 31, 2020 by the Abbey Glen Pet Memorial Park Crematory and Michael has his ashes.

Randy was brought permanently into our home on February 8, 2015 after his owner Sandy became very ill and died seven weeks later.

Rest in Eternal Peace Randy!

Randy aged 15 years, 1 month, 28 days
(In human years he would have been 76 years old)

Randy was originally owned by my next door neighbor, Sandy Koestel, until her death on March 31, 2015. I adopted the cat after her death.
