He was born in Sparta on August 16, 1937, to the late Raymond and Verna Mae (Condit) Belcher. A graduate of Sparta High School in 1955, he excelled in football, basketball, and baseball. Sports were always at the center of his life.
With a strong work ethic, Don worked in the construction field for 43 years, retiring in 1999. He was a member of the Commercial Carpenters Union Local 200. Working first as a lather, he won several awards for his trade work and worked as a supervisor on many large commercial jobs in the Columbus area including, Easton and Tuttle malls. He also built his current home in 1961. Needless to say, he never shied from a good day's work.
Don was an avid softball player and bowler, he loved golf, fishing, and camping at Lake Erie and the Florida Keys. He drove stock cars in his younger years. In addition to the Carpenters Union, he was also a member of the Mt. Vernon Moose Lodge No 2555. He attended Sparta United Methodist Church and was married in the Sparta Advent Church.
From the old school, Don was a simple man, ornery to his core. He worked hard and played hard. Belch was never one to shy from the table and enjoyed a good meal. Don took great pleasure in participating with his sons on the golf course, ballfields, and while working, as well as on the softball field with his daughter, each were treasured moments. Rugged and tough, he was a fighter when needed. He had a passion for all sports, especially those played by his family and grandchildren. He was happiest watching them play. He will be remembered for his large heart, helping ways, and warm smile.
Those left to cherish his memory include his beloved wife of almost 65 years, a romance that started in high school; Gladys (Givens), children: Greg (Kathy Squires) Belcher, Sherrie(William) Johnson, Tim (Teresa Harris) Belcher, Todd (Shannon Duncan) Belcher; grandchildren: Robyn (Ian) Mott, Brent (Kaley) Belcher, Jarrod and Dustin Johnson, Maddison (Dustin) Eichhorn, Byron and Ashlynn Belcher, Curtis, Taylor, and Makenna Belcher, 5 great-grandchildren, sisters: Debbie (Bill) Young, Carla Emmons, brother Ken Belcher, nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
