DEATH CLAIMS LUTE M. FIELD, EX-FIRE CHIEF
Cattleman of Old West Days is Stricken at City Hospital; Funeral Services Today
Lewis Millard (Lute) Field, pioneer resident and the city's fire chief during the administration of Mayor Joseph W. Catick, died early yesterday in a San Bernardino hospital. Mr. Field, retired for a number of years, at one time owned vast cattle holdings in Colorado, although he lived in San Bernardino continuously since 1884. He was one of the city's remaining ties with the colorful era of the old west and was widely known throughout the valley. In San Bernardino his first home was on the southwest corner of Mt. Vernon Avenue and Baseline, and in recent years he had made his home at 737 Sixth Street. He was 74 years old, having been born in Maquoketa, Iowa, Sept. 15, 1867, and came to Calfiornia and to San Bernardino with his parents, Dexter and Sabra E. Field, 57 years ago. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs,. A. Humphrey, of Pittsburg, Pa; and Mrs. Katherine Lauster, of Sidney, Mont., and several nieces. Funeral services will be held today at 2 p.m. from Stephens & Bobbit chapel, with internment to follow at Hillside cemetery, Redlands.
