OBITUARY
One of Redlands earliest settlers, Mrs. Herbert C. Smith, passed away, Saturday evening at her home, 426 Cajon Street. Even though sickness confined her to her home for about two years, death came as a shock to her family and scores of friends through this valley. Mrs. Smith, whose maiden name was Emma Field, was born in Maquoketo, Iowa, Nov. 28, 1864.
At the age of nineteen she with her father, Dexter Field, and family moved to San Bernardino, settling on a ranch on Base Line. Three years later she was married to Herbert C. Smith, who also came frm Iowa. After making their home in San Bernardino for about two years they moved to Redlands. This was in 1889. Redlands being in its infancy then, they have seen it grow and progress for over thirty years. During this time Mrs. Smith has been active in social business and religious activities.

She leaves behind, her immediate family, Herbert C. Smith, her husband, and three children, Mrs. W. C. Adams of El Segunda, Millard F. Smith of Los Angeles, and C. Davenport Smith of this city, and also three sisters and one brother, Mrs. A. L. Humphrey of Pittsburg, Mrs. F. B. Lanster, of Ewink, Colorado, Mrs. A. C. Edson of Fortuna, Calif., and L. M. Field of Ridway, Colo. Funeral services will be held at the Cortner Bros.' parlors Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock....
