OBITUARY
REMEMBERANCE - written by his son, Millard Smith
Herbert C. Smith was born in Lowville, State of New York, Sept. 5th 1860, ending this earthly career May 17, 1928 at the age of 67 years, 8 months, and 12 days. His only education was received in the common schools, and the institutions of experience. With his parents and family he migrated to the far west, Iowa, at the age of nineteen, and coming to San Bernardino in the year 1885, where he was married to Emma Field, an Iowa girl December 9th, 1886. From this union three children were born, all now living, M. F. Smith of Los Angeles, Mrs. W. C. Adams of El Segundo, and C. D. Smith of Redlands. Mr. Smith was a resident of Redlands for 38 years, when Smiley Heights was an unimproved picnic spot. He has always been an active member of the Knights of Pythias, and Secretary of the Endowment Rank for many years. Leaving behind are five grandchildren, all his children being married and comfortably situated in homes of their own. Those whom have known "Bert Smith" through the 38 years of constant residence in Redlands, always knew him as an honorable husband and father, living the motto of the order he cherished, an example for others to follow, FRIENDSHIP, CHARITY and BENEVOLENCE. For the past few years he has been living in partial retirement in Redlands, and with his children, since the loss of his wife six years ago; being highly respected in fraternal and benevolent circles. Herbert C. Smith, died as he lived, an unproclaimed God's nobleman, bringing by acts and deeds, sunshine and gladness out the silence and darkness of night to the members of his family and all of his friends.
