Catherine (Codispoti) Dollive Epstein died in Berkeley, California on February 23rd, 2023, at the age of 87 following a brief illness.

Cathy was preceded in death by her beloved husband Dr. Samuel S. Epstein, and her parents Catherine and Vincent C. Dollive. She is survived by her brothers and sisters-in-law, Vince and wife Mindy Dollive, Pete and wife Patty Dollive, stepchildren, Mark and wife Nikki Epstein, Julian Epstein, Emily Epstein-Perkins and husband Andrew Perkins, niece Raina Dollive and grandsons Ethan, Calvin, Sam and Benjamin.

Cathy was born in 1935 in Sant' Andrea, Italy. She immigrated to Canton, Ohio in 1949. After completing high school, Cathy attended Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio and graduated in 1957 with a degree in home economics. For a brief time, she worked in public relations for the Illuminating Company in Cleveland. Cathy then took her talents and love of travel overseas where she taught on U.S. military bases throughout Germany and Italy.

Upon returning to Cleveland, Cathy taught high school home economics. It was in Cleveland that she met her husband Samuel S. Epstein, an internationally recognized expert on cancer prevention and author of numerous publications including the widely acclaimed Politics of Cancer, among others, who was then teaching at Case Western Reserve.

Cathy and Sam moved to Chicago in 1976 after Sam became a professor at the School of Public Health, University of Illinois at Chicago. It was in Chicago that Cathy earned her real estate license. She then started her own company and enjoyed remarkable success due to her vast knowledge of the Chicago market, and the warmth with which she embraced her clients and the Chicago real estate community.

As a resident of Chicago, Cathy was an enthusiastic patron of the arts and enjoyed theater, music, and art. Cathy was an avid reader with a vast knowledge of history, literature, politics, and the arts. But Cathy's greatest joy was sharing her love of Italian culinary art with her family and friends, by whom she was often seen as a beloved matriarch. She was an accomplished chef who frequently entertained visitors with her charm, her wit, and her wonderful cuisine.

After the passing of her late husband Sam, Cathy continued to provide support for his work to the School of Public Health University of Illinois, Chicago Circle, where Sam had become professor emeritus.

As a citizen of the world, Cathy embraced diversity of culture and her long list of treasured friends spans the globe. Cathy uniquely had the ability to connect with people on a deeply personal level, taking a lasting interest in their individuality. Her family and friends cherish the memory of her intellect, culture, generosity of spirit, passion, and lifelong pursuit of learning. Her dedication to those she touched and loved was simply boundless, and she is deeply missed by her family and friends.
